Alas, no one got any farther than four step out. One person reached someone in California. Another reached someone in Oregon. But despite the fact that some students sent out four or five e-mails at the beginning, the contacts died out before five degrees. Seems we have some difficulty trusting strangers. Or we have too much spam to let this e-mail go through. Hard to say.
For the most part, the letters were sent as I wrote them, with little personal input. And, probably as a consequence, each generation of forwarding added nothing new to the message, so I'm supposing that a lot was lost in the FW: FW: FW: FW:
